FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE :
SELANGOR AGAINST RELEASE OF GMO MOSQUITOES.
Shah Alam, Selangor, 30th April 2008, Wednesday - Dr A. Xavier Jayakumar, EXCO for Health.
The Selangor State government strongly objects to the release of GMO Mosquitoes, as past research on other GE insects have failed even in the field trial stage.
This will be the first major release of genetically engineered insects into an ecosystem anywhere on earth, the Selangor State government considers the release of millions of genetically modified terminator mosquitoes into wild ecosystems, a reckless and uncontrolled experiment with a risky technology.
All previous research by the IMR has only been carried out in strictly controlled environments, therefore there is no way of evaluating the ecological damage and long term environmental impact of release the GMO Mosquitoes. Science has shown that the ecological damage of releasing genetically modified organisms is very often irreversible.
As the EXCO on Health, I am very concerned over the potential harm and long term consequences that the people of Selangor will have to put up with and pay for if this experiment goes wrong.
We must understand that we are releasing mosquitoes, and there no telling how far these mosquitoes may travel and their possible interactions and mutations with the existing ecosystem is unknown. The mobility and range of insects pose international regulatory challenges never faced with Genetic crops.
There has not been sufficient research and study in analysing whether in future, these GMO Mosquitoes may carry other human- contractible viruses that thus far have not affected humans, research has also indicated that GMO mosquitoes have a longer life-span and can live longer than traditional mosquitoes.
The Selangor government firmly believes that the recent spread of dengue have convinced us that mosquito population cannot be reduced unless there are concerted efforts by the community as a whole, genetic control is not the answer.

FRIDAY 14th MARCH 2008
As a result of a mere 2 hour plus downpour, almost half on Taman Sentosa, Klang was flooded, up to 3 feet in some areas. Sentosa in the past 10 years has gone from bad to worse in terms of maintenace and development. It has been ignored by the previous government of Selangor, and its past elected representatives have not cared for the area or the people.
This time around Dr Xavier spent all of Friday wearing boots and standing in knee deep waters till 11 pm at night. Various teams comprising of PKR volunteers went around gathering food to be distributed to the residents. A bread line (making sandwiches) was set up at out bilik gerakan to feed anyone who came there for shelter.
Right beside Taman Sentosa, 2 new housing developments have sprung in the past two years. Namely Bandar Puteri and Bandar Putera. Both these developments, have water drainage systems that flow into the existing Sentosa main drainage systems. Unfortunately, unchecked development has led to the drains becoming clogged with earth. This is not the sole factor, apart from that, most of the drains in Taman Sentosa are stagnant, clogged with rubbish, and a haven for mosquitoes and other pests. It will take a decent amount of time to solve the drainage and cleanliness issues in taman sentosa, but we are determined to get to the bottom of it.
Surprisingly last Friday when it rained, the MPK and the District Land Office and the Jabatan Parit dan Saliran, all turned up to inspect the situation (many residents were surprised that they had turned up). Pumps were brought in to pump out the water, and residents were provided food and water by Parti Keadilan Rakyat volunteers till almost 3 am. Kebajikan Klang sent food, but their food only arrived at 1 am, by which time most of the residents and gone to bed.

I am deeply concerned with the flooding in Taman Sentosa, this should not be happening in
a mordern urban setup. We would have to sit down with all the authorities to find a solution
This would involve the whole of Kota Raja as the flooding was in Johan Setia , Jln Kebun,
Bt 8, and Sri Muda.
I ask all the different agenies to give urgent attention to these areas.
I would like to thank the residence for their patients and understanding ,and be rest
assured we will get to the bottom of this .
Dr Xavier Jayakumar
Volunteers, and party members, stayed around Tmn Sentosa till 4.30 am distributing food and ensuring the safety of people. At 4 am the flood waters had begun to recede leaving the entire taman in one of the worst mess of garbage imaginable.
We will post photos of the Floods asap.

Most of the pics are self explanatory, would like to add that the gentlemen in Red (or maroon) uniforms, are part of PAS’s Unit Amal, and they did a spectacular job at crowd control and keeping the peace. Kudos!!

Love the flag below, !!!

In the end after nomination, PKR & PAS both announced their candidates and everyone got down to work !

We would like to know what S K Devamany meant by “we have to see what type of people( Al Jazeera/ 25 Nov)came for the assembly” Is he talking about class , caste or race.
Either way the statement is uncalled for and smacks of racism, this coming from a MIC parliamentarian. This is why we Indians are in such a horrible state. It’s clear the MIC is no more relevant. We should unite and send a strong message to the UMNO led BN.
Come join us STOP THE ROT- Vote for Change.
